Lord Buddha's Advice to Calm a Disturbed Mind...
Once Buddha was walking from one town to another town with a few of his followers.. This was in the initial days. While they were traveling, they happened to pass a lake. They stopped there and Buddha told one of his disciples, "I am thirsty. Do get me some water from that lake there."
The disciple walked up to the lake. When he reached it, he noticed that right at that moment, a bullock cart started crossing through the lake. As a result, the water became very muddy, very turbid. The disciple thought, "How can I give this muddy water to Buddha to drink!"
So he came back and told Buddha, "The water in there is very muddy. I don't think it is fit to drink." After about half an hour, again Buddha asked the same disciple to go back to the lake and get him some water to drink. The disciple obediently went back to the lake.
This time too he found that the lake was muddy. He returned and informed Buddha about the same. After sometime, again Buddha asked the same disciple to go back. The disciple reached the lake to find the lake absolutely clean and clear with pure water in it. The mud had settled down and the water above it looked fit to be had. So he collected some water in a pot and brought it to Buddha.
Buddha looked at the water, and then he looked up at the disciple and said," See what you did to make the water clean. You let it be.... and the mud settled down on its own - and you got clear water. Your mind is also like that! When it is disturbed, just let it be. Give it a little time. It will settle down on its own. You don't have to put in any effort to calm it down. It will happen. It is effortless.

Wisdom
It always pleased the Master to hear people recognize their ignorance.
"Wisdom tends to grow in proportion to one's awareness of one's ignorance," he claimed.
When asked for an explanation, he said, "When you come to see you are not as wise today as you thought you were yesterday, you are wiser today.''

Thus Spake the GOD...
Celebration
"What would spirituality give me?" said an alcoholic to the God.
"Spirit-free intoxication." was the answer.
Greatness
"How can I be a great man-like you?"
"Why be a great man?" said the God,
"Being a man is a great enough achievement."

The Lord is alwalys on the side of Right
A friend once tried to console Lincoln in his many problems by saying: " I hope the Lord is on our side."
Lincoln replied emphatically that this was not his hope! " I am not at all concerned about that, for we know that the Lord is always on the side of the right. But it is my constant anxiety and prayer that I and this nation should be on the Lord's side."

Can I Borrow $25?
A man came home from work late, tired and irritated, to find his 5-year old son waiting for him at the door.
SON: 'Daddy, may I ask you a question?'
DAD: 'Yeah sure, what it is?' replied the man.
SON: 'Daddy, how much do you make an hour?'
DAD: 'That's none of your business. Why do you ask such a thing?' the man said angrily.
SON: 'I just want to know. Please tell me, how much do you make an hour?'
DAD: 'If you must know, I make $50 an hour.'
SON: 'Oh,' the little boy replied, with his head down.
SON: 'Daddy, may I please borrow $25?'
The father was furious, 'If the only reason you asked that is so you can borrow some money to buy a silly toy or some other nonsense, then you march yourself straight to your room and go to bed. Think about why you are being so selfish. I don't work hard every day for such childish frivolities. '
The little boy quietly went to his room and shut the door.
The man sat down and started to get even angrier about the little boy's questions. How dare he ask such questions only to get some money?
After about an hour or so, the man had calmed down , and started to think:
Maybe there was something he really needed to buy with that $25.00 and he really didn't ask for money very often The man went to the door of the little boy's room and opened the door.
'Are you asleep, son?' He asked.
'No daddy, I'm awake,' replied the boy.
'I've been thinking, maybe I was too hard on you earlier' said the man. 'It's been a long day and I took out my aggravation on you. Here's the $25 you asked for.'
The little boy sat straight up, smiling. 'Oh, thank you daddy!' he yelled. Then, reaching under his pillow he pulled out some crumpled up bills.
The man saw that the boy already had money, started to get angry again.
The little boy slowly counted out his money, and then looked up at his father.
'Why do you want more money if you already have some?' the father grumbled.
'Because I didn't have enough, but now I do,' the little boy replied.
'Daddy, I have $50 now. Can I buy an hour of your time? Please come home early tomorrow. I would like to have dinner with you.'
The father was crushed. He put his arms around his little son, and he begged for his forgiveness.
It's just a short reminder to all of you working so hard in life. We should not let time slip through our fingers without having spent some time with those who really matter to us, those close to our hearts. Do remember to share that $50 worth of your time with someone you love.
If we die tomorrow, the company that we are working for could easily replace us in a matter of hours. But the family & friends we leave behind will feel the loss for the rest of their lives.

For Young Parents...
I dreamed I stood in a studio
And watched two sculptors there
The clay they used was a young Childs mind
And fashioned it with care
One was a teacher - the tools she used
Were books music and art
The other, a parent, worked with a guiding band
And a gentle loving heart
Day after day, the teacher toiled with a touch
That was deft and sure
While the parent stood alongside
And polished an' smoothed it o'er
And when their task was done
They were proud of what they had wrought
For the things they had moulded into the child
Could neither be sold nor bought
And each agreed that they would have failed
If each had worked alone
For behind the parent stood the school
And behind the teacher the home.
And watched two sculptors there
The clay they used was a young Childs mind
And fashioned it with care
One was a teacher - the tools she used

The Face of God...
A newspaper photographer was sent to Ecuador in 1987 to cover the earthquake that devastated much of the country. In midst of such catastrophic suffering, he witnessed a scene of compassion that moved him so deeply that he wrote a story about it.
Here is his account: " The line was long but moving briskly and in that line, at the very end, was a young girl about twelve years of age. She waited patiently as all those up front of that long line received a little rice, some canned food and a little fruit. Slowly but surely, she was getting closer to the front of the line, closer to the food that was being distributed.
The young girl did not notice the growing despair on the faces of those distributing the food. The food was running out. Instead, the young girl's attention seemed to be riveted on three younger children who were standing at a distance, across the street."
At long last she stepped forward to get her share of the food. All that was left was a solitary banana.
Quitely she took the precious gift and smiled her gratitude.
Then she ran across the street to the three younger children. She peeled the banana very carefully and divided it into three equal parts. She placed one part of the food into the hands of each famished child.
Then she sat down and with a smile, licked the inside of the banana peel."
"At that moment", the photographer concluded, "I swear I saw the face of GOD!"

The Star Thrower...

He noticed a little boy picking up the starfish one by one and throwing them back into the ocean. He observed the boy for a few minutes, accosted him and asked what he was upto.
The boy replied that he was returning the starfish to the sea, otherwise, they would die.
Eisley was both touched and amused. He asked the boy; how saving a few when so many were doomed would make any difference whatsoever?
The boy picked up a starfish and as he threw it back, said… "It's going to make a lot of difference to this one!"
Eisley left the beach and went home to continue writing only to discover that he could not type a single word. He returned to the beach and spent the rest of the day helping the little boy throw starfish into the sea.
"Our world has been profoundly influenced by the thoughts, beliefs and actions of all its past and present habitants. History is created not only by those whose names are revered and celebrated, but also by the infamous and unknown. All those who live, carve out in some special way their very own niche."

Successful or Useful?
When asked what he wished to become, as a young man, Nobel Laureate Albert Einstein was reported to have said, "I want to become a useful person, not a successful person."
Asked what he meant by it, the eminent physicist replied, "A successful person is one who takes from society more than what he gives it. A useful person is one who gives the society more than what he takes from it."

Abraham Lincoln's Letter to the Teacher of his Son
He will have to learn I know, that all men are not just, all men are not true. But teach him also that for every scoundrel there is a hero, that for every selfish politician, there is a dedicated leader. Teach him that for every enemy, there is a friend.
It will take him time I know. But teach him if you can, that a dollar earned is of far more value than five pounds. Teach him to learn to lose. And also to enjoy winning.
Steer him away from envy, if you can, teach him the secret of quiet laughter. Let him learn easily that the bullies are the easiest to lick.
Teach him if you can, the wonder of books. But also give him quiet time to ponder the eternal mystery of birds in the sky, bees in the sun, and owers on a green hillside.
In school, teach him it is far more honourable to fail than to cheat. Teach him to have faith in his own ideas, even if everyone tells him they are wrong. Teach him to be gentle with gentle people, and tough with the tough.
Try to give my son the strength, not to follow the crowd, when everyone is getting on the band wagon.
Teach him to listen to all men. But teach him also to filter all he hears on a screen of truth, and take only the good that comes through.
Teach him if you can how to laugh, when he is sad. Teach him there is no shame is tears.
Teach him to scoff at cynics and to beware of too much sweetness.
Teach him to sell his brawn and brain to the highest bidders, but never to put a price tag on his heart and soul.
Teach him to close his ears to a howling mob, and to stand and fight if he thinks he is right.
Treat him gently, but do not cuddle him, because only the test of fire makes fine steel.
Let him have the courage to be impatient. Let him have the patience to be brave.
Teach him always to have sublime faith in himself because then he will always have sublime faith in mankind.
This is a big order but see what you can do.
He is such a nice fellow, my son!

The Law of the Garbage Truck
How often do we let other people's temper affect our mood? Do we let a terrible driver, or a rude comment ruin our day?
The mark of a spiritual aspirant is how quickly we can regain our focus on what is important. One man learnt this experience while in the back of a New York City cab. Here's what happened.
He was travelling in a taxi, on his way to Grand Central Station. All of a sudden, without warning, a black car jumped out of a parking space right in front of them. The taxi driver slammed on his brakes, skidded and missed the other car's back end by inches.
Then, the driver in the other car, who nearly caused a huge accident, whipped his head around and started abusing the taxi driver.
But the taxi driver just smiled and waved at the guy. The startled passenger said, "Why did you take it so easy? The guy almost caused your car to crash and sends us to hospital!" The taxi driver laughed and then related what he called, "The Law of The Garbage Truck."
"Many people are like garbage trucks. They run around full of rubbish, filled with frustration, bursting with anger, and packed with disappointment. As their garbage piles up, they need a place to dump it. And if you let them, they'll dump it on you. When someone wants to dump it all on you, don't take it personally. You just smile, wave, wish them well, and move on. You'll be glad you did. I assure you.”
The passenger started thinking how regularly he let garbage trucks run right over him? And how frequently he took his own garbage and spread it onto other people, at work, at home, or on the streets? It was that day he promised to himself, "I'm not going to do it anymore."
Over time he learnt how to distinguish when a "Garbage Truck" was coming to dump all over him. He noticed the junk they were carrying and prepared himself to avoid it all being unloaded onto him. Like the taxi driver, he did not make it a personal thing; he just smiled, waved, wished them well, and moved on.
“Be always saturated with Love. Do not use harsh words against anyone, for words wound more fatally even than arrows. Speak softly and sweetly. Sympathise with suffering with an unshaken faith.”

Ten Point Formula For a Better Nation...
The is the ten points formula which will lead us to RAMARAJYA of Gandhiji’s ideal, if implemented, have been placed before Sri V V Giri, President of India and Sri Kandubai Desai, Governor of Andhra Pradesh, during a personal interview on 9-11-1971 when they visited Vizianagaram by Challapalli Brahmaji Rao. They have promised to study and take suitable action.
On reviewing the results of Swaraj after 24 years, we find that we could not achieve the results for which we fought for. On the other hand, we find corruption, indiscipline, laziness, unrest and deterioration in every walk of life.
Our Vivekananda Seva Samithi felt that there must be some thing wrong in our planning and working in the administration after getting independence and started investigating the reasons for such a failure and found some practical methods to drive the country to establish a real social welfare state and now placing before you.
1. Proper care was not taken to mould the race: Special attention shall be given shall be given to improve the conditions of the Elementary Schools and teach discipline, morals and good behaviour to young children.
2. Defective Educational System: The present educational system shall be thoroughly revolutionized and man making and profession making education shall be given since the present system of education is designed to develop the brain but not heart, and throwing the country into un-employment.
3. Religion discarded: Religion, which teaches the process of evolution from brutality to humanity and humanity to divinity, is discarded, since some people were killed on the name of religion, at the time of getting Swaraj. True religion must be taught compulsorily in schools and Colleges and Machinery shall be set-up to acquaint the people with basic principles of all religions, which is the method to moral revival in Society.
4. Degenerating Cinema Industry: Since Cinema Industry has developed as the biggest medium of education even to the un-educated masses, serious measures may be taken to prohibit sex exciting and Crime thrilling pictures which are responsible for the degeneration of the race and increasing Criminal tendency in the country.
5. No Law implementation: Parliament and the State Assemblies are taking interest only in legislating the Laws but not taking the adequate care to implement them. Since our Swaraj is a fruit of Civil disobedience, the country is suffering the Lawlessness. All ranks of Officers and the People are taking it as a Dignity and fashion to violate Law. Hence, serious concentration shall be put on to strictly enforce the Laws among Officers and people of all ranks without fear or favour.
6. Delays in Civil and Judicial Administration: The delays caused by the machinery of the civil and judicial administration are the root cause for corruption which is a menace to the society.
Hence, a fresh and new code of Law and procedure of administration shall be substituted which suits our country, completely repealing the existing one, since present Laws has been designed by the British to keep the Indian Nation under slavery for the longest possible period and Law underwent thousands of amendments, defeating the original spirit.
7. Un-painful Penal Code: The punishment code shall be completely amended so that the criminals must be afraid to repeat the crime. Under the present procedure of the Law Courts, the criminals can escape punishment and if punished it is not painful to them, since the conditions in Jail are far better than the conditions prevailing outside and the tendency of crime mentality is increasing in the country.
8. Unprotected Police Administration: There is no security to life and property since the police department is utilizing all their energies in detection of crime and punishing the criminals. Their energies shall be concentrated in prevention of crime. The Police must be given a free hand to maintain Law and Order, removing the threat of political or judicial enquiry after every action of discharging their duties.
9. Abnormal Taxation: The price structure of the essential commodities of daily life is going up day-by-day to an unbearable level which may result in uncontrollable revolution. We think this is due to heavy taxation, direct and indirect for the up-shoot of the prices. Hence, steps shall be taken to reduce such taxation, which was levied on the average and poor man curtailing the wastage and expenditure in the Government Circles.
10. Published tours of Ministers and Officers: The Ministers and Officers are now touring, giving advance programs to study the conditions of the various places of the country which is resulting in a good show and expense.
They shall be instructed to make surprise visits at least 10 days in a month, when only they can study the conditions of the country in reality and understand things in the correct perspective.
The officers and their staff shall be trained as servants of the people according to the spirit of the sacred constitution of our country, as they are now feeling and acting as masters and rulers.
If we can implement the above suggestions, we hope, we can progress towards establishing Ramaraj of Gandhiji’s ideal. May God bless us all with required knowledge and strength, to save the hard earned Democracy and work for its good results.

Dr. Abdul Kalam's Letter to Every Indian

Why are we in India so embarrassed to recognize our own strengths, our achievements?
We are such a great nation.
We have so many amazing success stories but we refuse to acknowledge them. Why?
We are the first in milk production.
We are number one in Remote sensing satellites.
We are the second largest producer of wheat.
We are the second largest producer of rice.
Look at Dr. Sudarshan , he has transferred the tribal village into a self-sustaining, self-driving unit. There are millions of such achievements but our media is only obsessed in the bad news and failures and disasters. I was in Tel Aviv once and I was reading the Israeli newspaper. It was the day after a lot of attacks and bombardments and deaths had taken place. The Hamas had struck. But the front page of the newspaper had the picture of a Jewish gentleman who in five years had transformed his desert into an orchid and a granary. It was this inspiring picture that everyone woke up to. The gory details of killings, bombardments, deaths, were inside in the newspaper, buried among other news.
In India we only read about death, sickness, terrorism, crime.. Why are we so NEGATIVE? Another question: Why are we, as a nation so obsessed with foreign things? We want foreign T.Vs, we want foreign shirts. We want foreign technology.
Why this obsession with everything imported. Do we not realize that self-respect comes with self-reliance? I was in Hyderabad giving this lecture, when a 14 year old girl asked me for my autograph. I asked her what her goal in life is. She replied: I want to live in a developed India . For her, you and I will have to build this developed India . You must proclaim. India is not an under-developed nation; it is a highly developed nation.
YOU say that our government is inefficient.
YOU say that our laws are too old.
YOU say that the municipality does not pick up the garbage.
YOU say that the phones don't work, the railways are a joke. The airline is the worst in the world, mails never reach their destination.
YOU say that our country has been fed to the dogs and is the absolute pits.
YOU say, say and say. What do YOU do about it?
Take a person on his way to Singapore . Give him a name - 'YOURS'. Give him a face - 'YOURS'. YOU walk out of the airport and you are at your International best. In Singapore you don't throw cigarette butts on the roads or eat in the stores. YOU are as proud of their Underground links as they are.. You pay $5 (approx.. Rs. 60) to drive through Orchard Road (equivalent of Mahim Causeway or Pedder Road) between 5 PM and 8 PM. YOU come back to the parking lot to punch your parking ticket if you have over stayed in a restaurant or a shopping mall irrespective of your status identity… In Singapore you don't say anything, DO YOU? YOU wouldn't dare to eat in public during Ramadan, in Dubai .. YOU would not dare to go out without your head covered in Jeddah.
YOU would not dare to buy an employee of the telephone exchange in London at 10 pounds (Rs.650) a month to, 'see to it that my STD and ISD calls are billed to someone else.'YOU would not dare to speed beyond 55 mph (88 km/h) in Washington and then tell the traffic cop, 'Jaanta hai main kaun hoon (Do you know who I am?). I am so and so's son. Take your two bucks and get lost.' YOU wouldn't chuck an empty coconut shell anywhere other than the garbage pail on the beaches in Australia and New Zealand ..
Why don't YOU spit Paan on the streets of Tokyo ? Why don't YOU use examination jockeys or buy fake certificates in Boston ??? We are still talking of the same YOU. YOU who can respect and conform to a foreign system in other countries but cannot in your own. You who will throw papers and cigarettes on the road the moment you touch Indian ground. If you can be an involved and appreciative citizen in an alien country, why cannot you be the same here in India ?
In America every dog owner has to clean up after his pet has done the job. Same in Japan ..
Will the Indian citizen do that here?' He's right.. We go to the polls to choose a government and after that forfeit all responsibility.
We sit back wanting to be pampered and expect the government to do everything for us whilst our contribution is totally negative. We expect the government to clean up but we are not going to stop chucking garbage all over the place nor are we going to stop to pick a up a stray piece of paper and throw it in the bin. We expect the railways to provide clean bathrooms but we are not going to learn the proper use of bathrooms.
We want Indian Airlines and Air India to provide the best of food and toiletries but we are not going to stop pilfering at the least opportunity...
This applies even to the staff who is known not to pass on the service to the public.
When it comes to burning social issues like those related to women, dowry, girl child! and others, we make loud drawing room protestations and continue to do the reverse at home. Our excuse? 'It's the whole system which has to change, how will it matter if I alone forego my sons' rights to a dowry.' So who's going to change the system?
What does a system consist of? Very conveniently for us it consists of our neighbours, other households, other cities, other communities and the government. But definitely not me and YOU. When it comes to us actually making a positive contribution to the system we lock ourselves along with our families into a safe cocoon and look into the distance at countries far away and wait for a Mr.Clean to come along & work miracles for us with a majestic sweep of his hand or we leave the country and run away.
Like lazy cowards hounded by our fears we run to America to bask in their glory and praise their system. When New York becomes insecure we run to England . When England experiences unemployment, we take the next flight out to the Gulf. When the Gulf is war struck, we demand to be rescued and brought home by the Indian government. Everybody is out to abuse and rape the country.. Nobody thinks of feeding the system. Our conscience is mortgaged to money..
Dear Indians, The article is highly thought inductive, calls for a great deal of introspection and pricks one's conscience too…. I am echoing J. F. Kennedy's words to his fellow Americans to relate to Indians…..
'ASK WHAT WE CAN DO FOR INDIA AND DO WHAT HAS TO BE DONE TO MAKE INDIA WHAT AMERICA AND OTHER WESTERN COUNTRIES ARE TODAY'
Lets do what India needs from us.
Thank you,
Dr. Abdul Kalam

Stronger Rupee = Stronger India
Let me ask a question first.
What type of economic strength is preferable to India?
A) A strong Indian economy fueled by its cheap labor due to a weaker rupee against dollar, where the Indians end up working in shifts, late nights, whole nights and what not… only doing low profile jobs which foreign companies want to offload to India, so that they can concentrate on high end works and become even better. For instance in IT field, providing BPO services, support and maintenance work for products…
OR
B) A strong Indian economy fueled by its strong innovations and products, no matter whether the rupee is strong or weak against dollar... where Indians work only in regular office hours of 9 to 6, developing cutting edge technologies and solutions, selling our world class products both inside and outside India. For instance in IT field, imagine operating systems, compilers, databases etc all coming out of India…
I do not deny the fact that the IT boom in India came to a large extent because of (A). Well and good, we have had the benefits of our cost being cheap in western markets due to a weak rupee against dollar... We have had our share because of this advantage in the past 2 decades...
But at the same time doesn’t it make sense to move towards (B), instead of crying foul against rupee becoming stronger against dollar?
What a pity! Indian IT companies are feeling bad because rupee is becoming stronger against dollar! Reason, their profits will go down when the value of rupee is stronger, as every single dollar that comes into their account now means lesser rupee than earlier…(if for instance earlier they used to get 47 rupees for every dollar that comes in, but today its about 40!)
But isn’t this a matter of celebration? Our rupee is gaining importance internationally and is becoming stronger again… How many of us know that in 1947 when India got independence 1 Rupee was 1.2 US dollars?
These Indian IT companies instead of relying on a weaker rupee for their profit should now look at coming out with innovative products and technical solutions. What have these companies done in the arena of core system products? Why don’t we have any operating systems, compilers, database systems, development platforms etc coming out of India? Why don’t we develop tools like Photoshop or flash? We have talent, but they all are working in American companies on these products... Cannot our Indian IT companies setup at least small teams to develop such products?
Instead they are planning to make their employees work on Saturdays too! So that their profits can increase due to extra hours the employees put in... As if India doesn’t have any other options other than cheap labor, workaholic labor!! Are there no brains in India who can setup companies developing products and make money just by printing out more serial numbers and burning their product DVDs?
If Indian companies continue to depend on its weak currency, then how would Indian economy survive in a world where all currencies have equal value? Survival of the fittest... Only greater innovation can help us in that case...
We need to have knowledge and technological advantage if India wants to become a superpower, not low cost based cheap labor advantage! Let the Chinese do it...
I hope that rupee becomes more and stronger so that Indians are forced to use their brains and come up with innovative products and next generation technologies, than to provide low end services…
We need to create a situation where other countries line up to buy our F-16s, to buy our operating systems, to buy our mobile phones and I-pods, to buy our Boeing, to buy our Mercedes…
A stronger rupee means we can easily afford foreign trips!
“A stronger rupee means Indians can buy things anywhere in the world on par with developed economies! We don’t have to spend cores of rupees then to buy a Boeing! We don’t have to pay tens of thousands of rupees for international air travels! A stronger rupee means greater international exposure! There won’t be a difference between buying a Maruti and buying a Mercedes! One can go on a trip to the Grand Canyon just like the way one goes to Ladakh or Nepal! How do you think American citizens are able to tour all over the world? Because they earn more? No. But because their currency USD is stronger... and this is where a strong rupee will lead us to!…“
I am not saying providing low end services is wrong... It gave us a very good start in the 90s. But that should definitely not be the bread and butter fueling our economic boom indefinitely in the future... For the simple reason that it can’t continue to do so any longer... other low cost destinations, cheaper than India are already coming up in the world… Let us move ahead… become more innovative... the journey has just started… This is just the beginning of all the beginnings…

Swami Vivekananda went to USA
He said to that lady, that since she was attracted only by his intellect, there is no problem. "My dear lady, I understand your desire. Marrying and bringing a child in to this world and understanding whether it is intelligent or not takes very long time. More over it is not guaranteed. Instead, to fulfill Your desire immediately, I can suggest a guaranteed way. Take me as Your child. You are my mother. Now on your desire of having a child of my intellect is fulfilled."
The lady was speechless...
